Thornhill Reds Senior Baseball

Big win at Milliken

The Thornhill Reds continued their winning ways Saturday afternoon, with a big 12-3 win in Markham, the second win of the week against the Mariners.

Rookie Eric Wakeman threw 5 scoreless innings in his GTBL debut, and picked up the win to go (1-0) in the young season. He worked ahead all afternoon, only walking one and striking out slugger Jesse Dynes in both plate appearences against him.

Gary Rose found himself a surprise starter in a depleted Reds outfield, and had 3 hits in his first 5 at bats of the year. Dan Lehmkuhl continued to show why he was the first team all star in 2010, as he went 3-4 with a walk and HBP. He also added an RBI.

Steve Wilson, Jeremiah Groulx and Vic Simon also had 2 hits a piece for the short staffed Reds, who put together a great team effort in earning a solid win.

Steve Palladino looked great in his second mound outing, working 2 shutout innings.

The Reds are back at it Wednesday night, when the East York Bulldogs come to Bishops for a 7:30 night game. Dave McElroy gets the ball for his first start as a Red.

Reds win home opener

The Reds finally got to play a home game in 2011, and after a 16 day layoff they started with a bang and beat Markham 7-3 in a rain shortened 5 inning affair.

Andrew Bergman threw all 5 innings in collecting his first win in a Reds uniform, turning in a very solid outing in soggy conditions.

Brian Macdonald clubbed a 3 run shot on the first pitch he had seenĀ on the season, and J.R. Crosby also homered in his first plate appearence of the year.

Bmac went 3-3 on the night, Justin Pennell was 2-3 and Brad Crone got his first hit in a Reds uniform going 1-1 with a walk. Sean Cunningham was 1-2 with 2 RBI.

The Reds are back at it on Saturday, when they visit Markham, 2pm at Milliken Mills Park.

Week 2 a wash

Both games for the week of May 16-22 have been rained out, as both NMKT and Markham parks have pulled the permits.

The Reds will look to get back in action on Wednesday May 25, at their home opener vs Markham. First pitch is 7:30, with Andrew Bergman slated to take the hill.

Reds tie opener

The Reds took a 6-3 lead into the ninth inning at Stan Wadlow park on opening night, but some costly errors forced them to settle for a 6-6 tie in game 1 of 2011.

The Reds wasted an excellent effort from starting pitcher Gary Rose, who went 5 strong innings, giving up just 1 hit, and striking out 8 Bulldogs.

Sean Cunningham went 3 for 4 in his Thornhill debut, and Greg Fleming had 2 hits and an RBI in his return. Dan Lehmkuhl looked good as the Reds new leadoff man, also adding 2 hits and a stolen base on Monday night.

Lefty Adam Frydman, left after facing 1 hitter in the 8th inning with an apparent elbow problem, which is worrisome news to the Reds staff.

Thornhill is next in action May 17th at Newmarket, where righthander Dave McElroy makes the start in his Reds debut.

Reds ready for action

The 2011 season is just around the corner, and after finally getting outside for some much needed work, the Reds seem ready to go.

Gary Rose has been announced as the opening day starter, and he will take the hill against his former team East York. Early in the year, all pitchers will be on a pitch count, so expect to see multiple arms on the mound opening night, and through most of May. Monday night should be a pretty exciting night, as the Reds parade their new look lineup out at Wadlow, and look to open with a big W.

The Reds will have to wait to play on their home field for one more week, as Wednesday nights game was cancelled by the city of Markham.
