Thornhill Reds Senior Baseball

Reds shutout Army

For the second straight meeting, the Thornhill Reds shutout the Ilderton Red Army, winning the opening game of the Hap Walters Tourney 5-0.

Vic Simon(5-0) was electric, fanning seven, in pitching a complete game shutout.

Sean Cunningham had a big two run single, and Tyler Cattapan blasted his fourth home run of the year.

The Reds meet Erindale and Niagara tomorrow and send Andy Orfanakos and Eric Wakeman to the mound.

 

Another home win

The Reds ran their home record to 9-0 Wednesday night, with an 8-1 victory against the Martingrove Sox.

The Reds got a total team effort in preperation for this weekends Hap Walters Tourney in Mississauga, with most position players splitting the game, and six pitchers also took the mound for Thornhill.

Greg Fleming had three RBI and Tyler Cattapan added another double to his rookie season, while Brad Crone went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Eric Wakeman returned to the mound after a three week layoff, working two scoreless while striking out two. J.R. Crosby made his debut on the mound, and showed why he may be the closer the Reds are looking for, striking out all three hitters he faced. Chris Berwick, Steve Palladino and Andy Orfanakos all worked scoreless innings as well.

This weekend sees the Reds face a great tuneup for the Elimination tournament, when they travel to Mississauga for the Hap. Ilderton, Erindale and Niagara are the Reds competitors looking to slow down one of the provinces top teams, Vic Simon gets the ball Friday night in game one vs Ilderton 8:30 start at Erindale Cardinal field.

 

Simon stymies Hawks

Vic Simon moved to (4-0) in 2011 with a dominating complete game performance on the hill for the Reds on Wednesday night. Simon scattered six hits, struck out eight and allowed two runs (none earned) in beating the Newmarket Hawks 5-2.

With the win the Reds now have a five point advantage atop the GTBL standings, and avenged the last meeting against the Hawks that saw the Reds lose 17-3.

Thornhill is off until next Wednesday when they put their 8-0 home record on the line, hosting the Martingrove Sox as the only game of the week before they play in the Hap Walters Tournament in Mississauga next weekend. Eric Wakeman is expected to get the start for the Reds.

   

Reds dismantle Redbirds

For the second straight meeting, the Thornhill Reds mercied the Thornhill Redbirds, this time by a 12-2 count.

Dave McElroy was excellent on the mound for the Reds scattering three hits over six innings of work while striking out six, improving to (3-1) on the year.

Tyler Cattapan continues to rip apart senior pitching with three hits (two doubles) an RBI and run scored. Drew Roberts hit his first home run of 2011, a two run shot to put the Reds on the board in the top of the first, he finished with three RBI. The Reds also continue to get great production from Jeremiah Groulx, who again went 2-3 and moved himself among the league leaders in hits and average. Gary Rose got a spot start in the outfield, and responded with a couple of hits as well, pushing his average up to .500 (7-14) on the season. Chris Bloom had two more RBI and is in the top five in the GTBL this season.

The Reds are right back at it tonight at Bishops Cross where they meet the Newmarket Hawks in a battle for first place in the GTBL standings.

 

Mariners top Reds

The Thornhill Reds fell behind early on Monday night, and couldn't battle back as they dropped a road game to Markham 10-5.

Andy Orfanakos(2-1) turned in a gritty six plus inning performance, but suffered his first loss of 2011.

Justin Pennell went 2-3 with two RBI, and Paul Wilson continued to impress also chipping in with two hits and a run scored. Brian MacDonald continued his excellent year, also going 2-4 running his league average up to .407

The Reds are right back at it Tuesday night when round two of the battle of Thornhill sees them facing the 3-6-1 Redbirds.
